The mokume-gane [ moe-koo-may gah-nay ] technique can be traced back to the 17th century. Originally, it was used by Japanese armourers in the manufacture of traditional samurai swords. It involves mutual permeation of such precious metals as: platinum, palladium, silver, gold: white, red, yellow, purple, green, pink, blue, copper, brass and shakudo, shibuichi. The combination of these metals creates a design, which imitates the grain of a tree and is absolutely unique. Depending on the type of design, the following styles have been distinguished: itame, masame, mokume, ayasugi. Today, this technique is used for making exclusive jewelry, is extremely rare and few jewelers specializes in this technique. ...
